My 18-Month Journey with Laser Hair Removal: From IPL Frustration to Diode Mastery
The past 18 months have been a transformative learning experience for me as I’ve immersed myself in the world of laser hair removal. But let me be clear—this isn’t my first rodeo when it comes to hair removal. In fact, I’ve spent years of my life helping people get rid of unwanted hair, especially through intimate waxing. If you know me, you know I’ve never shied away from having honest, no-filter conversations about vaginas and pubes—it’s just part of the job!
When I first started my laser journey, I rented an IPL machine from SkinBase. At the time, I trusted their training and stuck with their recommended settings. But as treatments went on, I found myself frustrated by the results. Clients weren’t seeing the smooth, long-lasting effects they wanted, and I wasn’t happy with the finer hairs still hanging around. I knew I needed to dig deeper, so I began reading every blog and research paper I could find on the science of laser hair removal, and that’s when the real education began.
IPL: Great for Some, But Not for All
One of the biggest challenges I faced was the limitations of IPL technology. For starters, the spot size on the IPL machine was far too large to treat intimate areas like the labia—I couldn’t get into every nook and cranny (excuse the pun)! For someone like me, who prides herself on thoroughness in intimate waxing, this wasn’t going to cut it. I’m known for leaving no hair behind, and that standard didn’t change when I moved to laser.
On top of that, IPL just doesn’t work well for clients with darker skin tones or even a light tan. In the beauty world, we use something called the Fitzpatrick scale to classify skin tones, and IPL is unsafe for anyone over a Fitzpatrick 4 (essentially anyone with a tan or darker). I couldn’t turn the fluence (laser energy) up high enough to effectively treat finer or lighter hair, and IPL simply can’t handle Indian or tanned skin without risking burns or pigmentation issues.
Deep Diving into Laser Technology: Lessons from Experts
Determined to give my clients better results, I didn’t stop there. I started listening to every podcast and reading every expert opinion I could find on laser hair removal. One thing became clear quickly: machines that claim to do it all, often don’t do one thing particularly well. For me, the main focus in my treatment room is hair removal, and I needed a machine that could deliver excellent results on every skin type and hair type.
I visited numerous laser companies, notebook in hand, jotting down details like the wattage of handpieces, spot sizes, and wavelengths. Eventually, I realized that to treat every skin type effectively, I’d need a machine that combines three key wavelengths: Nd
, Alexandrite, and Diode. These terms might not mean much unless you’re a laser therapist, but trust me, they make all the difference when it comes to delivering results.
Why I Chose Diode Laser Technology
After extensive research, I decided the Diode laser was the best option for my clients. I did consider the Cynosure machine, which also combines multiple wavelengths, but the pain levels were a dealbreaker for me. My clients know I’m all about results, but I’m also all about comfort! The Diode laser offers the perfect balance—effective on a wide range of skin tones and hair types, but without the unbearable pain.
I’m thrilled to announce that I’ve invested in The Smart Group Diode, which I believe is the best machine for hair removal. With this advanced technology, I can now give my clients smooth, hair-free skin without the worry of hair coming back after a few months. IPL often “shocks” the hair, meaning it can grow back after a brief period. Diode laser, on the other hand, destroys the follicle, ensuring long-term results.
Nothing Shocks Me in the Treatment Room—Vaginas and All!
And for those wondering if I still treat intimate areas? You bet I do. Whether it’s waxing or laser, nothing shocks me in the treatment room—vaginas and all. My commitment to getting into every nook and cranny has never wavered, and now, with the Diode laser, I can confidently say that I’m offering the best hair removal solutions possible.
A Final Word of Caution
One last thing before I wrap up: If a clinic ever tells you they can treat tanned or darker skin with IPL, be cautious. IPL is not safe for those skin types, and the risk of burns or pigmentation issues is very real. Always make sure your therapist is using the appropriate laser technology for your skin tone.
The Future is Smooth and Hair-Free!
I’ve learned so much on this journey, and I’m excited to share my knowledge and experience with my clients. With the Diode laser now in my treatment room, I’m confident that I can deliver the results you deserve—smooth, hair-free skin without the pain and without the worry of hair regrowth.
Here’s to embracing the best version of ourselves—hair-free and confident!
